I was giving myself a crazy sore neck by tensing(scrunching, if its a word) my shoulders during squats. Once I learned to relax the pain disappeared.
I had a pain start last week in the same general area. I was doing a bench press and as soon as I was done my neck right below the back of my skull felt like someone was ripping and pulling at it. A couple days later I did some pull-ups and the pain came back but not as bad, so I laid off... other than that there was no other sign of pain so I dunno wtf happened.
If your getting it whilst benching it could be because your pressing very hard against the bench with your head when you lift. You will do this if you dont stop yourself when the weight gets heavy/hard.
