Revision of Unified MMA Rules (7/3/08)

    From Sherdog: http://www.sherdog.com/news/news.asp?n_id=13533.

    Summary:
-BJM's definition of the "Mohawk" area for illegal back of the head strikes is being adopted as the official standard for the Unified Rules.
-Downward strikes with the elbow are no longer illegal, as long as they are not to an illegal area. The intention (according to the article) was to "prohibit the technique to the restricted spinal cord area, not ban the actual movement itself."
-Covering the mouth/nose with your hand is now illegal, covering with a forearm during a choke is not.
-Weight classes were redefined. 10 classes, starting at 105 lbs. and going up in increments of 10 (meaning welterweight would now be 165-175) until Light Heavy, which gets a big change, now ranging from 205-225. Heavyweight is 226-265 and Super Heavyweight (265+) is now an official weight class.
-Knees to the head of a downed opponent were not added...not sure if they were discussed or not
-10 Female MMA weight classes added (no specifics given)
-3 Minute rounds with 90 second rest periods made standard for Amateur MMA

No word yet on whether nor not the UFC will adopt any/all of the new regulations.

Personally I'm excited as hell to see those giant downward elbow smashes we haven't seen since UFC 10 or so. Imagine the possibilities from mount, downward elbows would make for some much quicker finishes.

What Gary Goodridge's crucifix-->repeated elbows to the head count as this? Because that is the most epic, yet horrifyingly rape-like GNP I've ever witnessed, and I always kind of wondered why the back crucifix GNP went away.

It shouldn't be too long before the rule set gets adopted in the major promotions. The unifed rules seem to have a lot of backing from some influential state athletic commissions including NJ and the UFC and other states typically follow NJ commission.

    The smother rule is stupid.
Also, the new weight classes are retarded. 195-205 is what now? That is a major weightclass and losing the word "heavy" from it might take away some of its prestige. I realize it won't mean much to you or I but a lot of people just want to see the "Heavy weights"

    those people can watch yamma.

the new weightclasses aren't as good as the ones i'd been working on, but they are nice and round, and i agree with the ranges they are at.

edit: my next hope is that they'll do the same thing with boxing weight classes.

    Boo.

Hell, if anything, move the weight classes around LHW, and leave it the same. 205 is just too stacked to go around messin' with the guys in any way.
