It's because Japanese mainstream MMA has it's roots from pro wrestling; it was a very natural progression from the worked wrestling matches in RINGS, Pancrase, UWF, UWFi to PRIDE. Most people don't seem to understand why PRIDE was the way it was; it's because it was so close to pro wrestling to the fans eyes (and not in a bad way) by the time it came around.

Jiu Jitsu has much more of an impact on American MMA because the Gracies had their hand in designing the UFC when it first started.
