Have you considered perhaps getting cinder blocks and stacking them on top of each other to make squat stands?
Yeah either that or a couple of sawhorses. Initially I thought it wouldn't really matter since this is just short term until I'm back at uni and can join the gym but I found the hack squat so awkward I'm tempted to now. I;m just worried about the safety aspect of a home made squat rack.

Hack squats are very ackward to lift from the floor off. I prefer to put the bar on pins (akin to a rack pull, 1/4 of the shin below knee level) and increase the weight a bit. I tried all types of grip widths, flexing the hips and knees together, or one before the other, but I just could not avoid rounding up the back when hack squatting from the ground (most likely a flexibility problem.)
