To address the original question: why do we run?
Well, I don't generally run unless I'm being chased by a bear or maybe if I'm feeling ebuliant and I decide to sprint for the fun of it.
As an aging amateur, I do sports to stay in shape because I HATE running unless the running is taking place during a fun game, like tennis or sumsuch.
When I was a real athlete, I ran because my coaches made me run. I'm sure it had some beneficial effect on my game day perfomance.

I always hated running and am not a great swimmer. Skipping is ok, because I have good form.
I've had the best cardio gains for general sparring and Judo by taking up greco/freestyle wrestling. It's fatiguing as all hell, and it's sport specific.
I've noticeably increased my strength and endurance, and shed 6kilograms in five weeks (I wasn't carrying around much fat to begin with).

What # of time or distance do you run each workout?
400 600 or 800 meters
4 to 8 intervals

If you can, try to watch film or video of Randy Turpin, Sugar Ray Robinson, Alan Minter or perhaps Roberto Duran, when skipping as part of their training regimen.
And prepare to be AWED.

Style: No longer training
Back from the gym, too dark/cold to run outside so I just did a nice jog for 45 minutes followed by 6 sets of sprint intervals.
I like skipping, when I fractured my heel I couldn't really run properly for about 8 weeks. So I did 1000's and 1000's of skips on the balls of my feet. That was pretty awesome though it led to other imbalances as I was compensating for the fracture.
