    You hear it spoken of quite a bit in UFC, especially because Joe Rogan is a high-level student under its exponent, Eddie Bravo, and Joe Rogan is one of the voices of MMA, literally.

    But its utilization? Rubber guard is like the "Crazy Monkey" boxing style - it's a fairly different-looking take on conventional wisdom, and there are pockets of individuals who utilize it (Tito Ortiz vs. Liddell in UFC 40-something for CM), but it's not part of the majority
    Oh yeah, I realise that, but I'm still surprised that guys who are still very much developing their MMA game (the ones on TUF), as opposed to guys who have been pros for a while and are unlikely to radically change their game, aren't going to it more. I mean, it's been around for a few years now. I guess I overestimated how influential Eddie Bravo is with jits and MMA coaches.

    Of course he got outmuscled some, but any strength advantage is gonna be significantly magnified if you can barely use one arm.

    The fact that very few if any high level bjj'ers in both mma and bjj/sub grappling ever even mess with rubber guard should make any reasonable person question if it is nearly as effective/universal as the guy selling the books would have you believe.

    I was rolling with our blackbelt instructor in class one time. I had him in guard, and managed to pull mission control then new york.

    At this point, he grabbed me, and straightened his back, and i was hoisted in the air. The whole time he's just sort of looking at me. I was like...oh shi- and let go of the position, and tried to work for something else.

    Keep in mind that very few people actually have the physical attributes to pull off rubber guard.

    Ha, i can't even touch my foot to my face, and i can play rubber guard well.

    well, i can touch my foot to my face after i'm warm/stretched, but its not something i do on a regular basis, as i'm sure you understand (the foot --> face thing)
