Yeah, "deadly" techniques doesn't always translate into "exciting" to watch. The MT matches I've seen aren't close to the top level boxing matches IMO.

MMA may be numero uno right now..but the sweet science has been around a Loong time, and it isn't going anywhere.
Boxing is #2 right now, waiting to re claim the number one position when MMA becomes too much like pro wrestling.

i dont see it getting huge. k-1 -could- have ben huge if it wasnt for the freakshow bullshit that westerners are only really willing to accept in WWE, and if they had tried a little thing called marketing

Part of the reason for them being boring is how much the scoring, and therefore, fight strategies are affected by gambling. Knees tend to score the highest amongst all techniques, therefore fighters are content to stay in the clinch and try to out-knee one another. Many times, unfortunately, the knees being thrown aren't particularly effective and this leads to a slow-paced, boring fight.

As another said, Elbows are NOT only allowed in Thailand. I promote Muay Thai events here in the USA and elbows and knee strikes to the head are permitted. Sure, there are many Countries, States, and jurisdictions that do not allow elbows, but there are many that do.

As far as Muay Thai's success, I don't think Muay Thai will ever see the popularity of Boxing or MMA. If we package it right, we may be able to see it become a little more mainstream though....

Thing is, there aren't enough great San Shou practitioners (meaning Cung Le level) out there right now. Even MT is a more common MA to go into.

It's too bad The Contender Asia wasn't shown here in the US - great show and characters and awesome fights.
