    Hell yeah! Hell no!

    BJJ Guard Reference Thread

So, there are way too many times that I am watching someone roll or I'm rolling and get put in a unique position and end up hitting a good control position that seems like it MUST be some sort of crazy guard position...but, no one knows.

So, you go home and scour the internet trying to put a name to your crazy new control position that made your kneebar to triangle transition almost seamless and not seem quite as gimmicky as when you learned it out of "Gene Lebells Grappling World: Encyclopedia of Finishing Holds".

So, to help in your search, I have compiled a list....with pictures (many of which were taken from Stephen Kesting and Elliot Bayev's article "Guard 101" originally published in three issues of Ultimate Grappling Magazine at the beginning of 2008 and republished on www.grapplearts.com on June 8, 2008), of some common and some obscure guard positions. The names given to each position are the most common names that I could find for that particular guard.

This list is by no means complete; but it goes a long way to putting a name to a position when you are trying to explain it to someone.

    Enjoy.

The Kesting article provides a pretty detailed analysis of the utility of many of these positions. http://www.grapplearts.com/Glossary_...osed_Guard.htm
