If he doesn't need "civilization" (including his computer), then why doesn't WM test his wilderness skills right away? Just get out there without anything from 'soft' civilization (AKA anything he didn't make from scratch himself).

No doubt whatever he's learned in the gym will be really useful out there.

He can left-hook dehydration, triangle starvation, armbar exposure, and grizzly bears would be a cinch in the clinch.

You seem to be confusing technology and civilization. Although technology can be a sign of civilization, and vice versa, they are not mutually exclusive.
