    PREPERATION FOR FIRST BJJ CLASS

    Anybody have any usefull info. for how I can prepare for my first BJJ class? I'll be starting at the end of December so I have at least a month to do some specific training.

    I have zero experience in that particular endeavor, but from what I've seen it would seem that one would want to incorporate grip and neck training above and beyond the ol' standards i.e. squat, presses, rows etc.

    Not great but not bad for a 37 y.o. I'm studying Chu-Do right now which is more of a TMA. I spar two days a week, train with an instructor once a week, and lift weights two days a week.

    Okay.
    I ask because generally BJJ beginner training seems to be learning basic positioning and drilling really basic moves (which makes sense)

    If you've been training for a while in another martial art you should be fine to start with.

    As Kein mentions, its never a bad idea to strengthen up your neck though.

    You don't really need to do anything special to prepare. Keinhaar's suggestion is good.

    Some cardio can't hurt, and flexibility especiallyin the legs and neck is useful to prevent injury. I wouldn't recommend doing specific strength exercises; the mistake many newbies make is to rely on their strength too much, when they should relax and look for openings for techniques. Don't worry too much - BJJ classes are not like shark pools where the newbies are torn apart and eaten if they're not properly prepared.

    Thanks for the input---I'll start working my neck and forearms tonight. I've always worked my traps pretty good but have neglected my neck for a while.
