You guys do realize that the Cung Le story on here too is from MMAyou.com. Does that mean that guy is working for that site as well?

    2) Helio and Carlos made "refinements" to JJJ (actually just Judo) only because they were taught by Maeda for just between one and three years - they made refinements to their incomplete knowledge of grappling. (Carlos was likely blue belt level when Maeda stopped teaching him!)

Also, Laimon needs to compete more.
From what I understand Maeda learned JJJ before studying judo and that's what he taught to the Gracies, but hey, that's just what the Gracies say.

Anyway, who cares, it's pretty much the same ground work in both arts. The only real difference I would say is that BJJ has evolved, by including things like leg locks and new guards, etc.

He just thought it was suspicous that you're first two threads linked back to the same site. Just don't make any threads that link there for a while.

Kano called his stly Kano-ryu Jiu Jitsu before he came up with the Judo name.

In the book "Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (theory and technique)" by Renzo Gracie and Royler Gracie, starting on page 9.....(I don't have a scanner)

"Mitsuyo Maeda (1878-1941)-originally trained in classical jiu-jitsu, but switched to the Kodokan at age 18. By making many professional challenge fights, Maeda clearly went against the strict moral codes of Kodokan Judo. Probally because of this, Maeda described his fighting method as jiu-jitsu" rather than "judo". There are other reasons why he switched the nomenclature of his art. When Maeda began fighting challenge matches, he used techniques that were not allowed in judo training, but, which were used in his old jiu-jitsu curriculum. Maeda also added and took out techniques that he considered ineffective."

    On page 11..

"Carlos Gracie was in fact a student of Maeda's no more than 4 years and possibly as little as 2 years. In such a short space of time, he could of only learned a limited amount of techniques. Consequently, most of the technical knowledge of jiu-jitsu had to be developed and discovered by the Gracies themselves over the years".

I bring this up to prove to myself that I am not insane and to again point out that I think it's strange for Marc Laimon to bag on the family that developed his style of martial art.

The judo-jiujitsu division is largely artifice. From everything I've read, the terms were essentially interchangeable for members of the Kodokan at the time. And he wasn't using any sort of banned techniques. Armbars, chokes etc. are all part of the kodokan syllabus.
