I have two advices for you.
    1. Don't act up against the buddhist priest. I am not saying this because I like him... on the contrary.
    2. He contributed in pointing out that you are doing something wrong when you kick like that.

The whip kick (we call round kicks "hook kick", since they operate similarly to a hook punch) is an advanced technique. Don't even bother with it until you've been training for at least a year (full time, competing. I'd wait even longer if you're a hobbyist).

Scoring with a front leg whip kick requires the ability to read your opponent's intention as he's attacking you. It is not good as a lead technique. Try setting him up by drawing him in, use footwork.

The spin whip kick should be practiced in combination with stepping & sliding footwork.

Drills I've used in teaching whip kick: (exclusively closed stance, usually orthodox):

    1. Attacker throws rear leg hook kick. Defender side steps & spinning whip kicks.

    2. Attacker throws front leg hook kick. Defender spin whip kicks.

    3. Attacker throws front leg ax kick. Defender spin whip kicks.

Since I mainly lead southpaw, I've found the following drills useful for spinning whip kicks; countering a rear leg hook kick, or a rear leg ax kick.
