I would definitely like to see more emphasis on hand techniques. Recently I have been doing some sparring with friends who study different martial arts. This has really shown me how bad I am at punching, and the degree to which someone who is comfortable with their hands can dominate a kicker like myself. On the bright side, my kicks seem as good as anyone else's.
So here's another vote for head punches in sparring or anything else that would help me with my hands. -

If I could change anything in TKD it would be the Jhoon Rhee foam pads and the hogus especially.
I believe it would encourage more TKD practitioners to condition their body to take blows rather than hide behind a shell.
Also, make point sparring med. or full contact, or at least in have some hard contact in class. -

I'm fine with a kick heavy art, if they'd only drop the fucking point system and make it heavy contact. I'm sure with the waist-up kick area, having a full kicking art would be really fun to watch, and clinching would be very unique.
It'd be like boxing with your feet, which seems to me would be kinda cool to watch. -

If you want to make taekwondo better for "real fighting", then you'd eliminate the clinch rules and just let people stay there and learn to deal with it. Of course, that makes the sparring a lot less fun to watch than the flashy kicks they do now.
TKD people get pushed around fighting other people for the same reason that basketball players are worse fighters than, say, hockey players - they play a game whose rules discourage contact. When you break that rule, you throw them completely out of their element.
