Ryno: And sport sambo rules (not freestyle) - are those like Freestyle but with Total Victory (throw for ippon while remaining upright yourself), no chokes, no twisting leglocks?

Sport has Total Victory (ippon), no chokes, no closed guard, and limited foot locks (straight only). Freestyle has none of those rules and less limits on subs.

Yes, Brad has a very natural aptitude for sure. He picks things up quickly...he never studied any combative art prior to starting with me.

As far as committing to the takedown, I am very pleased with how he did because I am always bitching about that to him in class. He had lost a match prior to that one and it was mainly due to lack of committment. The loss put his ass in gear.
(bold in the above is mine) I know all to well, awesome!

    Awesome job coach.

So he was limited to ippon, arm bars, and straight leg locks? tough rule set.

Yeah, pretty much...and pins. He lost two matches on points that day as well. We don't usually train for that style of sambo, so I am extra proud of him :)

Yeah, nothing motivates like a loss. Or a sharp stick. Congrats!
