You shouldn't have to wait to miss a front kick. You can throw a feint to lead into it, and it's especially effective when your having trouble closing the distance on someone. The way to feint is close enough so that it will indeed connect if they don't move out of the way. Two ways to do it are: 1) throw a controlled, fast high front round kick to the head, and as they step back burst forward and spin kick the torso. 2) throw a front kick to the torso deliberately so that they block it down or dodge it, and follow up with the technique. Often, after deflecting the feint they will move towards at you thinking they have the upper hand and walk right into the sbk.
Ultimately, there are many combinations that will lead into it besides feints, and the base of your ability to apply it in matches will really depend on how fast and accurate you are with the kick in the first place. Practice on the bag- left roundhouse, spinning back kick. Left, right punch, right roundhouse, spinning back kick...just keep practicing until the speed is there. -

I don't know what kind of competition you're thinking about using the straight back kick in, which may change your tactics. But I found most of my success with the straight back kick as a counter to a kick or as a clinch technique (Wait, what did he say?!). I love using the fade away jumping straight back kick as a way to break away from a clinch.
