If you really have your heart set on full contact karate, there are lots of kyokushin schools to choose from. Some more progressive than others.
There is no Enshin branch in NYC and no Ashihara branch either. The Enshin New York branch was on Long Island but is closed at the moment. Last I heard, the guy was going to open up a school somewhere in Long Island, but probably not close enough to you.
If I could make a recomendation, I would defiently check out here if you are looking for progressive karate . http://www.honmadojo.com/
The guy is a blackbelt in kyokushin from the Oyama branch and trains at Combat Sambo in NYC. I watched him fight a Sogo karate exhibition last year. Sogo is basically Daido Juku minus the space helmets. Very cool.
There is the IKO1 honbu in manhattan and lots of World Oyama branches. However, no Ashihara or Enshin. -

The problem is Seido is more about meditation than sparring, well at least the one I've seen is. The instructor teaching at the Massapequa branch won't let you spar until green belt and you can't get a green belt until you've taken a meditation class at the hombu dojo. Also I believe all gradings are done at the Hombu dojo as well.

I actually pass the seido dojo when I go to krav maga, and from the outside, I dismissed it as a new-age hippie mcdojo.

rsobrien - I actually live on LI, I just go to college in the city, so if there is an enshin place opening up on the island (preferably nassau) then I could definitely go there.
