    JKD kali

When I was doing kali at a JKD place we did a lot of training drills but I never got to do any sparring. That was part of my decision to move on. Is it common not to have sparring in JKD Kali classes?

If they have a bunch of classes it can sometimes happen that they don't schedule in sparring time as they have one million other things to do......jkd places tend to teach a lot of stuff. Usually though they have some padded sticks around and you can just talk people into extra sparring after class.

Well I've found a local place were sparring is part of the training and get to do boxing on the same nights. JKD was a learning experience but I finally found what I was looking for.

No sparring seems pretty common amongst the JKD Kali schools that I have seen. Lots of flow drills, not much fighting. I hear that there are exceptions however.

We sparred every class when I was doing JKD Kali. Flow drills were limited to a few sets, & then we geared up for sparring. We wore lacrosse gloves & helmets. We'd start stick sparring, then move to knife, then move to empty hand.

Its pretty dependent on the instructor and where their own focus lies.

Ever get to meet Vunak? I always wondered what he was like. Some of the articles I have read by him gave me a bad impression.

Never met him, but I've heard fun stories. I plan on doing his instructor's course next year.

Sounds cool. Is he just JKD Kali, or is he like Inosanto with a mix of styles? I know I could look this up, but I am damn, damn lazy
