the current system is very simple. fighters are instructed to protect themselves at all times. so long as they are doing so, they can continue to fight. the second - not three seconds later, the second the ref decides that a fighter isn't intelligently defending himself - that is, failing to follow the ref's groundrules for being allowed to fight in his ring - they're out. it's not, "well, maybe if i let him eat a few more punches he'll smarten up." it's over.

leaving the fight in the judges' hands its bad - you might lose. leaving your safety in the ref's hands is worse - you will lose. his job is to keep it a safe sporting contest, not allow a needless beating.

What you just described is the current rules. Which we are all aware of. This thread is about changing them or not.

Go watch the death of Douglas Dedge and tell me that there's no chance that the fatal blows landed in those last three seconds. Personally as somebody who does not take pleasure in a fight ending that way, I would rather see a handful of early stoppages than mandating the loser of every fight to take three more seconds of damage than he should have to.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Douglas Dedge would not have been even cleared to fight had this been a US or even Japanese sanctioned bout instead of some no-name cage brawl in Ukraine.

As much as I hate early ref stoppages I agree.

My whole outlook changed when one of the sports shows interviewed a few cans from boxing. The fighters who, are basically just tune ups for "real" fighters. They all sounded like Ali and many were in their thirties.

I was more upset that they don't have a minimum loss rule or something.
