Anyone know where results from Saturday's tourney are posted. The main website still had a sign-up sheet posted.

    Thanks

Graciefighter.com gives a nod of respect to Vargas' Team Jackson and Diego Sanchez.
Normally, I'd say I was grappling, but I was taking down and mounting people, and JFS has kindly informed us that takedowns and being mounted are neither grappling nor anti grappling, so I'm not sure what the **** I was doing. Maybe schroedinger's sparring, where it's neither grappling nor anti-grappling until somoene observes it and collapses the waveform, and then I RNC a cat to death.----fatherdog

    Hell yeah! Hell no!
Hi guys, sorry to be out of the loop, had some bad news from overseas that took up my attention the last couple of days. I'll be glad to give a quick synopsis of the tournament. Okay, here goes.

I was able to get down to 149 lbs, so I entered the executive lightweight division (over 30 years old) and the advanced featherweight division (140-149.9 lbs). My first match in the executive division went pretty well, I got a double-leg takedown, worked to the mount, then got the armbar went he tried to bridge me off. That put me in the final (there were only four fighters, go figure). Unfortunately, the other guy was Chris Luttrell, another Jackson Fight Team guy, so we flipped a coin and I got second (we don't compete against our fellow Jacksonites). The advanced division was a little tougher. I won my first match against a Charles Gracie guy. He pulled guard, I worked around and finally passed to side mount, worked that a few minutes, finally got the hammer lock for a submission. My second match was against a guy from L.A. named Russ Miura. Very tough fighter, submitted a BJJ black belt in his first match (knee bar), so I was pretty wary. I later found out that among other things, he is a current member of the Cal State-Fullerton wrestling team, he is Chris Brennan's #1 instructor at the Next Generation school (he charges $80 an hour for privates!) and has a sub wrestling record of like 39-0. Anyway, he got the first takedown, got side mount points, I pulled an escape, got to my feet, somehow got a single-leg takedown, almost got heel-hooked, wound up in bottom half-guard, he got some more side mount and full mount points, I escaped back to my feet, he took me back down and the match ended with me working for a kimura from full guard. The match lasted seven minutes and I lost 12-2. I was pretty happy, though, I did a lot better than everyone else (the next guy who fought Russ in the final got tapped in under a minute with a heel hook). I wound up in the loser bracket, though, got matched up against another BJJ guy, he pulled guard, I jumped back and avoided it, then I did something really stupid. I pounced on the guy while he was laying on his back, he got a hold of my head and one arm and I got caught in a triangle. I almost escaped but tapped in the end. So I got fourth place. I was disappointed in my last match, but pretty happy that I helped the team earn some points in the two divisions I entered. That was my first try at advanced division and I plan to be there again in March.

Overall, a great tournament. Everyone was super-polite, it was a really enjoyable experience. Something that you won't hear too much about is how well Diego Sanchez did against the guy who won the 8-Man tournament (Roy Nelson). Roy beat Frank Mir in his first match, so he's pretty damn good. He also weighs 275 pounds. Diego weighs 180 and used to compete at 159. He's not a big guy at all. For the first 5 minutes of the match, he was even with Roy. Even got a takedown but it rolled out of bounds. Diego wound up losing on points but he kicked ass in my opinion. I feel truly sorry for the next guy who has to make weight and fight Diego in MMA. He is really something else.

Oh yeah, Mark Bradford is a good friend of mine and is one of the guys that trains under Greg Jackson. He is a combatives instructor for the Department of Energy security training division at Kirtland AFB (ie he trains the guys who guard nuke convoys. Very tough hombre). The DOE paid for his plane ticket, hotel, entry fee and per diem for Grappler's Quest (that is what is known as a Sweet Deal), therefore he felt obliged to give them credit for his performance at the Quest. I wish the USAF would do something like that, dammit!

Anyway, there it is, Grappler's Quest West is a great time, it was well worth the $60 entry fee. If you want to see the best ground-fighters west of the Mississippi, that were they are.
"I had once talked to Billy Conn, the boxer, about professionals versus amateurs - specifically street fighters. One had always heard rumors of champions being taken out by back-alley fighters. Conn was scornful. "Aw, it's like hitting a girl," he said. "They're nothing."
