Overstimulation during sparring

that is true.....but even so, shouldn't their level of skill and ability to perform under pressure be more limited than it is with their light sparring?

Also its not to say they don't hard spar at all, it is just not the primary form of sparing. It works though :)

Keep an empty mind. If you see a punch, don't think about what you want to do, just block it. This applies for other striking techniques as well. Eventually your defensive and offensive techniques will occur sub-consciously.
