    Actually I can say with full confidence that shovels handles, handcuffs, pepper spray and the threat of prison is pretty motivating as well.

    No reason to join a military to be highly motivated.

    One advantage to pulley systems like the total gym or just a tower with a weight stack (probably easier to use since you don't have to get up and off a silly sitting sled) is that you can hit the upper back with less hassle compared to free weights. I don't know any way to hit the upper back without also hitting the lower back while using free weights, unless you have a bench to lie on.

    Of course, that might be a good thing since it enecourages people to develope more lower back strength.
