The awkward was because I spent probably as much time watching the bjj class as I did the sword class and felt a bit guilty for not giving the sword class my full attention, not to mention I can't think of two more opposite martial arts to be practicing right next to eachother.
The swords they used might have had a slight curve but it was hard to tell with the padding. The sensei did mention that they use them because they don't like using boken or shenai as they are too light.

The bellevue class is run by one of his senior students, I don't know any current info about the seattle location but I did use the phone number from the website and was able to speak directly with sensei McCartney. I did some looking on the interwebs and the guy seems pretty legit.
