Most of my search-fu revealed debate over milk making you dead or not, didn't see much about performance-related claims my first pass over(i'm at work, so I didn't use a fine-tooth comb)
I've seen whole milk in many wieght-gain programs, form its high fat and protein level. I for one have always used it because I'm a real sucker for milk, and it is always readily available. I've also used it in various protein mixes.
I think it's definitely valid. Let's face it though . . . milk is just a source of protein and good fats, and a calorie dense food if you are drinking whole milk. You can get that protein and fat from another source just as easily. If you like milk and enjoy drinking it, I highly recommend drinking it. Personally, I would rather get that nutrition from somewhere else.
The only advantage I can REALLY see regarding milk over other sources is that milk has a high level of availability because it's a liquid, so more of it is going to be absorbed by your body and it will get absorbed quicker.
Which is just damn delicious. 2 scoops of a good chocolate protein powder in whole milk makes a delicious, creamy, chocolatey beverage.

A lot of the initial statements seem overinflated to me, but I can understand they're trying to express how awesome milk is. It digests pretty easily I'd guess and you can drink it faster than it takes to chew a steak and stuff. Most people use milk as the base for their whey shakes too.
