Dubai Mixed Martial Arts: FiteSelektor
Martial arts: When fans pick fighters
Rohan Alvares, Sports Reporter
The Dubai International and Convention Centre is set to rumble on March 13 as FiteSelektor, the first Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) tournament comes to town.
And Tom Wesselink, the brains behind its birth, is confident the show can ride on the back of Dubai’s growing reputation and explode into a success.
“FiteSelektor is unique in that it is a first in the world. As you know, Dubai has an excellent reputation for being first on many fronts. “We are not only confident that we will be well received in Dubai, we also know that we have been well received,” said Wesselink.
“Take a look at the print media, look at prime time news coverage on Dubai One, Zee TV and City 7."
"People are excited about FiteSelektor and our tickets are selling fast. “Audience participation has never taken place before in the history of the MMA and this is what we are offering the people of Dubai,” he said.
“The big difference and the great thing about FiteSelektor is that the people can make the line-up themselves. The venue will be full of matchmakers, and they will all have their own vision of a fight. They will decide the fate of these fearless fighters; they decide the opponents; they will be in control.”
And with a purse of $75,000 (Dh275,445) up for grabs, Wesselink has told fans to brace themselves for some intense battles inside the ring.
Eight professional fighters have been recruited from around the world. The fights will be voted for by SMS on three occasions.
The first fight is arranged by public vote and after the fight the audience vote again from the six remaining. The second fight takes place, after which the audience votes for the third fight from the remaining four fighters.
Once the third fight takes place, it is clear the final fight between the two remaining fighters is through the process of elimination. n Tickets are available online at www.showbizme.com or call the Showbiz booking hotline Dubai 04-366 2277 and at all Virgin Megastores in UAE.

"FiteSelektor" still sounds like a Kraftwerk song.

Seeing as women have a hard time getting permission to do anything over there, I can't see them in a MMA match anytime soon.
