    Hand over mouth/nose when grappling

Rolling last night after class and a senior student put his hand over my mouth and nose at one point. I was pretty suprised.. I've never seen anyone do that before in class. We didn't get a chance to talk about it later

Is that allowed in competitions? I checked NAGA rules and I don't see anything that would prohibit it.

I have no idea about competitions, but I did have someone's loose and sweaty t-shirt drape over my face during a roll - clung to me like a damned barnacle, and made breathing impossible.

Not sure if one can use the hand right under the nose to shove it upwards (thus moving the head), but smothering and cross-facing are valid parts of the game, in competition. During rolling, it depends. You should expect to train under that type of pressure, but beware of spazztards. There is a big difference between a good sparring partner who's training aggressively with you and a reckless spazztard.

The street argument is retarded. BJJ is so much overkill for the street that its ridiculous. Unless you're the idiot that picks a fight with the high school wrestling team, barring knife or gun play, the opponent shouldn't make it past double leg + ground and pound - Osiris

Henderson used it on Silva in the first round of their fight.

I cover my little brothers' noses and mouths whilst they sleep. When they wake up they tell me they thought they were drowning. I tell them its sleep apnea.

I'm pretty sure my instructor has done it in pro brackets at GQ.

There's plenty of footage of BJ Penn rolling with Charuto and doing this. During training.

Crossfacing super-hard during training is pretty beat, but covering the nose and mouth? It doesn't hurt, it doesn't produce lasting damage, and it's something you may have to deal with in competition. There's no good reason not to do it in training.
