Well, there is when they reach the western world...

It's too bad that doing patterns isn't something that most international federation of whatever insist upon... if they didn't - instructors might have to get their young students to... oh I dunno actually contact spar for a while, or even funnier get them to practice the basics like punching and kicking PROPERLY.... cue lots of haymakers and wobbly toe punts.

After all gotta make the punters think they're getting the RL traditional ****, especially as little Jimmy's mom thinks he looks so nice in that little white Gi/Dobok/over=priced pajama set...

I quite like the medatational state you can achieve by going through the same dammed sets almost every class...

No wait......... this is a different sensation

    yep, it's boredom... my mistake.
Interesting points, but one of the main reasons why many traditional MA places in the States don't have full contact sparring is because the insurance policies of many places disallows such activities. And they would make less money from pussies who want to LARP tough guys but aren't tough guys themselves. Oh, and over-protective mothers who don't want their kids getting their **** kicked.

So why are there boxing gyms, MMA gyms, and Muay Thai schools in the same cities as these schools?

If I am going through the Bas Rutten Thai Boxing CD ("One! Three! One with a right hook! Two and a left straight!") I am doing a pattern of moves that never changes. Am I doing a kata?

No, you're doing what El Guapo tells you.
This isn't kata. This is survival.

Sophistry. From personal experience, I can tell that kata sucks. Back and fort, round and round in a big "H".

But if all non-sparring training sucks, then shadow boxing sucks as well.
