This is the thing I hated most about forms - your foot has to be x number of degrees, your legs have to be this far apart, your arms have to come exactly 12 degrees of the tangent line made by your left eyebrow and the third moon of Saturn, and your hair must have the shape of a comb over WHO FUCKING CAREs THIS DOESNT WORK

Kata I hate is when it's done stiff, lazy, lacking realism (embu: two man kata, are a good example of how to avoid bs moves, that or a good instructor who can point out, "What the hell does that move mean?"), rote (like one two three four, one two three four) or without power. Like Shihan used to say, "Kata wthout power is dance."
Kata I like are like the Bagua moves - explosive and fast and full power.
If you have to do kata then at least do it well. Maybe we should have a thread of BS'ers doing the best fucking kata they're capable of? Since a lot of posters have had some TMA training we could have a full "Your Kata Sucks month" in April.
I won a six inch trophy doing kata once, it was so cool.
today I saw people grading with their forms in the TKD class that I attend.
I can honestly say, it really made me want to leave.
If any more than half of them end up getting a new shiny fucking belt for the shower of **** they think is a pattern, well let's just say this....
I am going to have to find another class - because it will become brutally obvious that this is a class that will never get any better that the feeble 'kids in oriental style fancy pajamas fucking about thinking they're learning something useful' type that I really don't wish to have any part in.
It wasn't always like this - there was pad work and speed drills a plenty they even did some (gasp!) light(ish) sparing - it was never perfect, but it wasn't the total yawn fest it is now. We even tried and looked at self defense techniques that were effective and some that were flawed - we also looked at why they were flawed and what could be done (if anything) to make them effective.
These days though, it seems like all we ever fucking do is patterns.
Maybe it will be getter once the gradings done....
we can all get back into doing TKD for all the right reasons...
not for pretty patterns and fucking shiny new belts.
today, however - I really doubt it... just hope my cynical outlook will be proved wrong.
Sorry about the self opinionated rant, but the **** with patterns at the moment is really grinding my gears.
Been in schools that focused on forms for three weeks before testing, because the previous several months had focused on sd and sparring. But your school does sound pretty sucky.
