In that particular enviroment.........it's a little different. The entire reason for the edged combatives program was the casualty rate they were taking in jungle and urban operations against bladed guerillas at close-quarters. Within a certain radius, it just doesn't make sense to respond with your assault rifle.

Before the marines took up Pekiti Tirsia, they were experiencing casualties from edged weapon attacks. In jungle ambushes, the fighting can be really close quarter. Since the introduction of Pekiti Tirsia as part of their training, edged weapon casualties have diminished and the other side has learned to fear the ginunting.
