I think it is important to begin with pads that protect you and as your body adapts to the trauma, which it will, lighten the pads until they are as light as you can safely handle. This is by no means, a process that will conclude in a matter of months- more like years.

Not really sure what you mean there. When you say boxing all I can think of is bellypads.

I agree with the mouth guard thing! Even at my BJJ school a lot of guys don't use them, are they asking for dental problems?!

Once when we were really tired and just doing compliant drills, I was unfocused and accidently busted my instrutors lips. Another time, also compliant drills, some guy's bokken slipped out of his hands, hit me and busted my lip. My teeth felt wierd when I chewed for days. Some of the other guys have even lost teeth during compliant drills.

These days we ALWAYS use mouthguards, even during grappling. And you also get more used to breathing with them.

I accidently chipped somebody's tooth during a roll. I applied a neck crank, and he WAS wearing a mouthguard, but I guess it slipped out of position. I felt really bad for a long time. I've seen way to many accidents like that to roll without a mouth guard. It just seems like asking for trouble.

Wow, that sucks! There have been plenty of times that I've been elbowed in the face by accident and my mouth guard saved me. I think it should be a requirement!
