I cut a guy's lip with my cup the other day. I told him he just shouldn't be that determined to defend the triangle.

I second the notion!
Goddamit! If anyone is going to have a valid point - then surely someone who's actively training students and has been for some time (like - oh say off the top of my head Omega) is going to be the sort of person who knows WTF they're talking about.
I live in the south of England - and currently the weather is ****.
So whilst I train and get my flexibility and the basics (combos of strikes, kicking accuracy etc) sharpened I await for summer...
for the summer, a few friends and myself wish to get a little mini-throw down going in one of the areas of green public forest nearby.
And hell yes - I'm going to be wearing the full amount of padding I can get my hands on...
noggin, nashers, nuts, shins and mitts are all on the list of things I don't want to leave to chance.
And no - for the record, the guys in question aren't total 'Ninjah BS merchants', most are very competent MA practitioners... plus a few who aren't as 100% as they have only being studying their chosen MA for about four to six months.
And yes - they too will be wearing padding, gloves and mouth guards.
Even if it was a case of them noobishly leaving their guard down - I still wouldn't feel at all comfortable in catching them an unfortunate one and realizing that an ambulance needs to arrive for a bit of messed up dentistry....
PS - did anyone else find the Jim Carey karate BS comedy video utterly fucking hilarious, yet so close to the truth to be funny?

Maybe I just need tighter headgear.
Actually yes they do. The ones where your head hits something other than a glove.
Doesn't mean they're doing it right. Try training at Extreme Couture and the Pit. They wear head gear.
Even with elbow pads and knee pads, unless you're born like me, your nose can easily get busted up.Originally Posted by Goju - joe

Q, I should have tightened the top strap for you, it would have made a big difference. If you are not used to fighting with it (obviously you like banging without one) they tend to be annoying nonetheless. Not so much for what it takes away from your periphreal vison but just the fact that you can see the headgear there. Very distracting. We use the cage headgear at our gym sometimes, that's even worse. It does help preserve the movie star good looks though.
