If you send a link to the school/schedule you're talking about people can advise you more specifically. Also mention what you're interested in primarily (learning a specific style: MMA, BJJ, etc. or general self-defense, or whatever).

My instructor will still train you and corner for you but doesn't like people fighting under the school name until they've reached a blue belt level of competency.

Jits w/hits? Is that like, Ju Jitsu with striking involved as well? I am still nub with all the abbreviations and whatnots. And I couldn't figure out what it meant in the search function.

When people refer to 'jits with hits', it usually means MMA training.

If you're in Tigard area, I'd recommend Oregon Martial Arts instead. Mainly because it's close.
SBG has an affiliate in Beaverton called Impact. I've dropped in there a couple of times, they're pretty cool.

Style: Jiu-jitsu & HEMA
I'm at the Portland SBG about 4 days a week. Pretty much all the classes will exhaust a new guy, that's unavoidable but almost all of them would be a great start.
For a completely new guy I'd recommend Thursday nights from 6-9. Matt teaches a 1 hour intro to MMA which tends to focus on adapting basic Jiu-jitsu to counter ground & pound or to support it. Then the rest of the night Matt teaches a jiu-jitsu class.
I'd also recommend the same time slot on Tuesday nights. The gym's other black belt teaches a 90 minute Jiu-jitsu class starting at 6pm & after that there's a 1 hour boxing class.
Really though, all the classes are good class & all the coaches are good coaches. You really can't go wrong. Just figure out what excites you (grappling, striking, MMA) & then start with the classes that emphasize that.

You folks still out there at SBG? I'm planning on coming in this week, though I'm also checking out Portland Thai Boxing... I can only train every other week, and I'm totally new.
