If somebody is bragging about studying this ma or that ma -- tell them your looking for a new sparing partner.

I never tell people I study MA. If they ask I say I do combat spots. That sounds a little corny, but MA conjure up images of people chop chopping while wearing pajamas.

Why do you prefer people not know? Just curious.
I don't posture.. but I've had some highly entertaining
exchanges because I was candid about how I aqquired

I've heard people lie about how good they were, but never caught anyone in a lie about having studied martial arts.People of integrity expect to be believed. When they're not, they let time prove them right.

I am with Deus, I don't want people in general to know for a couple of reasons. It is none of their business, I don't want to deal with their questions or interrogations or them comparing themselves to me, I don't want to have to throw down when the inevitable challenge comes. That "show me something" is a challenge and the only way to deal with it is to throw down. I do not want to hinder the suprise element.
My only downfall is that I have a hard time keeping myself from doing **** (the way I move) that makes people say "You know something don't you". I say no.
I have never had someone claim to doing MA and then find out they don't, but I have come across people who say they do and it turns out they haven't done anything for many years.“We are surrounded by warships and don’t have time to talk. Please pray for us.” — One Somali Pirate.

What I find amazing is the people that will come up to me and tell me that htey do karate too. when I sk them what system they study, you get something like ..."Well, you know..kicking and punching stuff..like you do."
The vast amout of people will, of course, have black belts, yet can't give me the name of a system, and I'm amazed that for some reason, they can't remember the name of their sensei!
And yes, you'll inevitably get asked for an "on the spot demonstration", and I usually will just tell them to stop by my dojo sometiand I'd be glad to explain a few things to him if he's interested. Some of these people end up as students.
True Story Here: I had a guy one time stop into a commercial dojo I was just setting up. I was painting and sawing boards and this guy walks in and tells me he's a "Master" of something (XYZ) and wants to take classes from me.
I asked him "If you're a master of XYZ, then why do you want to take classes from just a lowly black belt like me?" He replied..."I used to work for the CIA and don't want my name in advertisements..but if you need an assistant instructor...." At that point, I told him thanks, took his phone number and told him I'd call him if I needed him.
Of all the nerve!

I had a buddy who found I did BJJ. He told me he did some grappling when he studied JKD. I said great, let's see what you can do.
I let him start in my guard, he went over me, I took his back and choked him with RNC in less than 15 seconds.
So much for that.
But yeah, once ppl find out, they gotta talk ****. Oh, btw, I had about 2 months training in BJJ when that happened.Originally Posted by Sifu Rudy Abel
