    ATA and My Father

Interesting thread here. I'll scan the 27 pages of posts. I do remember my Dad's 1st dan cert from the ATA is dated around '72 or '73. I think he left the org in '75.

Got a pic from '72 of him standing with a bunch of Koreans. I could only ID one of them.

Maybe people here could ID the other Koreans in the photo.

I'll get them posted up when I'm allowed to.

When I scanned the big pic I had to break it up in halves. Taken in Milwaukee 1972

    1st half
From L to R: The old man, ?, Gen. Choi,

    2nd Half
    From L to R: Gen Choi, ?, ?, Patrick D.

The gentlemen rocking the red pants looks to me like H.U. Lee.

My Google Fu would lead me to believe the gent on Gen. Choi's left is Nam Tae Hi.

I sent an email to ATA HQ to see if they could provide any clues.

Maybe, but I dont think so. His face in the pic I posted is too round. H U Lee had a thinner face.

    HU Lee

    SH Lee

Let me shoot this by you.
    (From the ATA site)
Haeng Ung helped Soon Ho see his vision, too, and inspired him to open his first Taekwondo school in Milwaukee, Wis., in the year of his arrival, which later expanded to three schools.
I think that is SH Lee in the red pants

It could very well be, HU Lee wasn't that thin when he was younger hence my guess. Keep us posted on what you hear back from HQ.

I am pretty sure that's H.U. Lee in the red pants as well. At that time the ATA was a branch of ITF as far as I have read. Also a black and white image search for Haeng Ung Lee brought up an ebay auction for some old martial arts magazine and one of the pictures looked a lot like that pic. I would post it but I cannot yet.

Finally the whole "he wasn't that thin at that age" thing wasn't accurate either. I have some ATA books and one of them shows an old black and white photo of him in a staged self defense situation and he looks to be about that size.

The ATA HQ got back with me and said Soon Ho Lee is the gent in the red pants. Only one not identified is the chap standing to Nam Tae Hi's left in the red jacket in the second photo. They're working on him.
