Gene LeBell is a Terrible Referee

A lot of people have been complaining about some of the bad calls MMA refs have been making as of late. I think a lot of people fail to realize that bad calls have been made in combat sports for a long time now and are actually quite better these days with the evolution of MMA. For example, take this clip of Gene LeBell refereeing a full contact kickboxing match between a local guy and a Thai fighter from the early nineties.

First of all, let me just say that I have a ton of respect for Gene as a martial artist, but his refereeing in this match is downright awful! First, he acknowledges that the Thai fighter throws an illegal elbow about 40 seconds in, but he doesn't even bother to deduct a point. Then, at about three minutes in, the local guy is clearly done; he is out on his feet and his eyes are swollen shut. Despite this, Gene simply restarts the fight and the local fighter continues to take an onslaught on unnecessary punishment. It's not until thirty seconds later when the Thai fighter headbutts the other guy three freakin' times before Gene finally decides to step in and stops the fight. Gene totally deserves the punishment he receives at the end of the video IMO. There's even a rumor going around that the local guy died later as a result of his injuries.

    Terrible refereeing by Mr. LeBell.

I think I saw a mullet and some shoulder pads.

The street argument is retarded. BJJ is so much overkill for the street that its ridiculous. Unless you're the idiot that picks a fight with the high school wrestling team, barring knife or gun play, the opponent shouldn't make it past double leg + ground and pound - Osiris

To be completely fair, it was obvious that the ring girl's beauty had caught Gene's attention and prevented him from focusing on the fight. Given those circumstances, he should be forgiven on that count alone and the ring girl should be charged with the untimely death of the fighter.

Wait, if the guy is Thai, then why is he wearing a haircut like they do in Once Upon in China and Crouching Tiger, and why were the bouncers trying to push the one guy out, and not bothering with the Thai guy who beat up Gene LeBell.

Dammit, why is every thing seem to be in slow motion.

Gene LeBell must've picked up bad habits after having to ref Muhammad Ali vs. Antonio Inoki; he didn't have to do a thing in that bout, because not a damn thing happened.
