Vale Tudo always has sounded bad ass. Like how bad ass does it sound to say Rickson Gracie won the 1995 Japan Vale Tudo Tournament? Wish i could put my name in there.

Well, according to many people who are either boxing fans or completely newbies to the whole fight sports it looks like a gay hug fest when a fight goes to the ground. So GHF? I know you yanks love your acronyms, so switching one acronym to another is pretty much the only thing possible.
Curiosity killed the cat. But damn it had a blast.

Saying the whole thing, "Mixed Martial Arts", is an improvement. The uber-testosterone crowd might have a retardathon once they realize the word "arts" is in there, though.

But reducing an entire sport to three letters--and saying them out loud, "Emma-Mae", sounds like the Huckabee family secret, conceived in-cestuo and never let out of the attic...

If I'd been on The Committee Which Decides These Things, there would definitely have been a vote for "Free-Fighting".

Ultimate Fighting - has a connotation to being a UFC fighter. MMA is so much bigger than just the UFC to be labeled as such.

Vale Tudo - has a completely different ruleset than modern MMA, so it is not applicable.

NHB - There are many holds barred in MMA, so it would be incorrect to call it no holds barred. Not to mention that it makes MMA sound more like a bloodsport.

Free Fighting - Not descriptive enough. Could be applied to anyone who is verstile in their training, even if they don't use MMA training methods. Would also cause Pay Per View confusion when charging fans $45.99 to watch "Free" Fighting.

I see nothing wrong with the term "MMA", but that's just me.

Pankration actually sounds better than any of the other suggestions. Not that it's going to make a difference.

    Which holds are barred?

I like Vale Tudo, but I find it confusing enough for people when I tell them I do "mixed martial arts" so I don't really think that would work.
