Date: 02/13/2008 9:00 PM ET
Event Type: Versus - Live Event
Location: Santa Ana Star Center, NM
Venue: Santa Ana Star Center - Albuquerque, New Mexico
Carlo Prater Vs. Carlos Condit
Jamie Varner Vs. Rob McCullough
Miguel Torres Vs. Chase Beebe
Manny Tapia Vs. Antonio Banuelos
Hiroyuki Takaya Vs. Leonard Garcia
Josh Grispi Vs. Mark Hominick
Del Hawkins Vs. Coty Wheeler
Charlie Valencia Vs. Yoshiro Maeda
Micah Miller Vs. Chance Farrar
Scott Jorgensen Vs. Damacio Page
Of note, Micah Miller who I believe is the younger brother of Cole Miller (TUF 5 contestant, lost of Joe Lauzon.) Varner and Razor McCullough should be a great fight. Leonard Garcia moves from (demoted from?) the 155 in the UFC to the 145 here in the WEC. Carlos Condit is one of the best 170lbs in MMA, I would like to see him in the UFC title picture as well.
So..how does this WEC thing work? You win a couple of fights, become a champion and then move up to UFC?
No. The WEC is it's own entity entirely. They've tried to make it clear that they're not a minor leagues for the UFC. I think that's debatable in the upper weight classes (except they don't have a heavyweight class). However, their big thing is the focus on the lighter weight classes. The fights at 145 and 135 are usually pretty spectacular.
I sooooo prefer the WEC to the UFC.
Looks like a real solid card.
It looks like there are three title fights on the card, is that correct? I don't WEC is a feeder organization for the UFC (with the exception of Joe Derkson(sp?)), I think that the guys that are successful in the WEC like Condit are content being a big fish in a small pond. With that said, I wonder what the future of Paulo Fihlo is going to look like. Is he just going to beat up the ranks of the WEC? That would kind of suck for a guy who was so dominant in Pride to have to move a smaller organization.
I dont get that non-heavy weight division. Screw your Bantomweights. MMA is weird in general because it doesnt matter how many wins you have its how your promoted. WEC and UFC are uncomparable because the fighters arent on the same cards.
After his last performance I don't picture him lasting very long to be honest.
