The street argument is retarded. BJJ is so much overkill for the street that its ridiculous. Unless you're the idiot that picks a fight with the high school wrestling team, barring knife or gun play, the opponent shouldn't make it past double leg + ground and pound - Osiris

You can fake a leg kick chamber and hit them hard on the button and knock someone out, which is something I have trained in Karate but not Muay Thai. What I have seen so far in Muay Thai that is the closest equivalent is hard thai leg kick quickly bring the leg back resetting and hard thai head kick.
Yeah, thats basically my expereince too.

Though my MMA coach comes from a kyokushin background, so he teaches the same thing, but i have not seen this in other kickboxing schools.

I have to disagree with you however on the fact that karate focuses on closing and getting the hit in, then getting out.(then again, we train at different systems and different schools, so of coarse the training would be different) though it seems 90% of karate schools seem to do what your describing, which depending on the quality of instruction, have varying results.
EDIT: Looks like i ended up agreeing with you.

My training seemed to be focussed on throwing a group of big hits into where your opponents balance is weakest. In other words, take his balance with your strikes.

This is especially seen in our lead hand strikes, our 'jabs' look like the 'drop step' that jack dempsey used.

The traditional, quick, snapping jab i learned more so in MMA than in karate.

Okay, i need to organize my thoughts. My point is this: Another thing ive seen in karate 'theory' in practice is the fact they try to disbalance with their strikes, and im sure it goes hand in hand with "In and Out''

Problem i guess arises when they get stuck in the "Ikken Hisatsu" mentality where they try to use only one hit, one hit, one hit, instead of following up when appropriate.

Or try to disbalance without following up appropriately

I think the question should be, will there be more WKF (not people for the WKF I mean people who practice their style of kumite) style guys modifying their style for mma or is Machida a once off?

BJJ might make you a better ground fighter, but Judo will make you a better dancer.

I know the thread's moved on, but I'd like to say I don't find Machida boring at all. In fact I find his crisp, accurate striking style rather refreshing.

I think it is unfair to say Traditional Martial arts will not do well in MMA and not realize that the goals of most TMA is NOT to enter into MMA. I dont think that it would be fair to get Chuck Liddell to enter a Kata tournament or point fighting...he would get killed! or Anderson Silva to show Bunkai of a Kata. They are worlds apart! Now they both have to do with Combat, one is an art and one is application, they can both translate to actual combat...but one takes a bit more work. I think it shows a lack of understanding to compair any traditional Martial art to modern combat sports for a "which is tougher" mentality and think that one is so much better. But that is just me.

    Have a good one.

I also think you're missing the point of the forum, martial arts in general, and life.

Yes, in that fighting is useful, and kata is not.
