MJ.C: So, you’re willing to give established guys — someone like Mir or even Lesnar — more leeway?
STEVE MAZZAGATTI: I wouldn’t say leeway. I would just say punishment. You just can’t let the lower guys get beat up like you would an A-class guy. Look, these guys do this to make a living. My decisions affect their ability to make an income and get sponsorships and everything. I have as much responsibility in a fight as the fighters toward them winning.
To be honest, there's been lots of fights where I thought the stoppage was a little sketchy... But usually when I go back and watch them again, I realize this^^^ is what is happening. Steve Mazzagatti has more of fights with B-class fighters, so that is why I thought he was more inconsistent.

There's a point in MMA where a certain caliber of guy can still turn it around when someone greener isn't very likely to do so, that's definitely true. I will confess, though, watching the fight the first time I thought he was stopping the fight.

It's much more about the image than it is about safety. I can turtle and get punched 30 times, and as long as I'm not getting hit in the back of the head, it's gonna suck and my arms will be sore, but I'm not getting concussed, broken, or put in any serious danger.

If it was all about safety, and not MMA's image, a lot of fights would be radically different.

    re: safety... ^^^
I seem to recall someone posting that foot-stomps are potentially a lot more damaging than some of the disallowed techniques, possibly requiring surgery and a lengthy recovery. That would support the image vs. safety issue.

Its awesome. Of course I havent heard "rad" in years. LOL.

I still dont think that the stand up was unwarranted. Dont they usually stop the fight and stand them up to deduct one point?
He was warned about the head puches and he continued. This puts Porno Steve in a bad spot. If he doesnt stop it, and Mir or anyone else gets hurt then people (especially his Boss , Dana) will be pissed that they let it go on to long.
Its best to err on the side of caution, IMO.

As for foot stomps. I dont see them used as much as they could be. Chric Leben is well known for them. I would use them too. Meataxe is right. Its easy to break someones foot this way, yet they arent disallowed.

I guess it doesnt look as dirty as punching someone in the base of the skull.

Sure, the only difference between breaking a foot and a spine is how 'dirty' it looks.

I think you missed my point.

My point was, some techniques are allowed because they dont look as "dirty street fighting" as others.
I wasnt comparing a broken neck or permanent brain damage to a broken foot.

Maybe you should have someone else read for you.

You were suggesting that the difference in how 'dirty' they look was a major factor in their permissability. I was pointing out that, contrary to your assertion, most likely their relative danger to continued breathing was most likely decisive.
