Actually the point of having shorter matches is to lessen the effects of repeated blows to the head. That's why it is probably less violent than boxing. By having shorter fights you reduce the amount of attrition to the fighters making their potential careers longer and reducing the chance of long-term effects.

I think three rounds is enough, but the scoring system used by Pride was better suited to mma. Any system that scores trying to finish the fight higher than "octagon control" (which too often results in lay'n'pray) is better than the system used now.

I know the short matches reduces blows to the head, but by comparison, 5 rounds would still be much less than boxing. Boxer take WAY more hits to the head in many more rounds. Particularly when you factor clinching, grappling, etc, in MMA. If guys want to stand and bang for 5 rounds so Zuffa and the fans can get a good highlight reel, fine. But I really don't think 5 rounds is much worse than 3. The exception being the smaller gloves...making the strikes more dangerous.

I have seen so many 3 round fights where I wish it were 5 rounds...just to show a clear winner.

But, I do understand the concern with increased round. But, I think it would solve the judging problems to some degree.

I also like the Pride rules, but they were much longer rounds.

I agree that a decision is always a bad way to end a fight. I guess it's a balance between the excitement of the fights and the safety of the fighters. In the end I believe that three rounds is ok, the atheltics commision is kept happy and the fighters are protected. It's what's best for the sport.

In Pride the first (of three) rounds was 10 min, the others were five min. rounds

The street argument is retarded. BJJ is so much overkill for the street that its ridiculous. Unless you're the idiot that picks a fight with the high school wrestling team, barring knife or gun play, the opponent shouldn't make it past double leg + ground and pound - Osiris

I mean "such as" in regard of others better than him that are also on the back-burner to the title shot. Obviously we have Rampage, Hendo. Chuck, Silva and Jardine are title contenders. I'll call these "the top 5". Excluding these dudes, where is Griffin on the scale of things?

There's always someone better. MMA is full of non-linear hierarchies. Forrest schooled Shogun who schooled Rampage, who will likely school Forrest.

I like the way they used to have that first 10 min round in Pride I believe. It always seems like the pace picks up and things start to pop off as the round has 10 seconds left doesnt it? maybe its just perspective. A lot of fighters get saved by the round bell, which was not the original UFC's intention. Go Rio Heroes!
