Stallone on Lundgren/Taktarov & Mayweather in MMA

Over at movie gossip site Ain't It Cool News, Sylvester Stallone has been answering a series of random questions from fans in order to promote his forthcoming Rambo film (titled, appropriately enough, "Rambo"). In the third crop of questions, an individual named "Gavin" asked Sly the following:

Oleg is primarily a Judo and Sambo specialist, and is not known for his hands, and yet he won the match. i bring this up because Floyde Mayweather JR recently announced his intentions to make a transition into MMA fighting. he would have to gain at least 10 Lbs to be in the UFC lightweight division, and while he does have great handspeed... i dont see him having the knockout power to make a seasoned grappler even think twice about taking him to the ground. in boxing, whenever you clinch, the ref will separate the fighters. in MMA Floyde would eat knees and elbows in that position surely he doesnt think he can defend a takedown, or fight off a submission attempt? and i would bet he's never taken a muay thia kick to the legs. my point is... i dont doubt his hands or his heart or his conditioning, i doubt his "overall" game to be competitive. i mean, if Dolph can be "outboxed" by a guy who isnt even a boxer.... what does that say? what do you think of this move by Mayweather, and what do you think of the UFC (MMA) in general?

I cant wait to see Rambo kill the Cloverfield Monster....at the box office i mean...... that is, if they are not one and the same destructive force. I am really looking forward to the all day Rambo Marathon on opening night! you have my $9.50 sir!

    To which Stallone replied:

Let me state, unequivocally, that Dolph Lundgren probably wasnít taking this seriously because Iíve seen him toss Carl Weathers into a corner with one hand then virtually terrify the man until he fled the ring claiming, ďIf you touch me, Iíll call my agentĒ or something to that effect. During Rocky IV, Dolph had hit me so hard I had swelling around the heart and had to stay in intensive care at St. Johnís Hospital for four days. Mayweather would not hold up to the pounding that he would receive and therefore the fight would be a waste of everyoneís time. Actually, if it went on a bit too long it would turn into a CSI crime scene.
A short reply, but I thought it was nice to hear some minor anecdotes regarding Dolph. I tend to agree with Sly that PBF in mixed martial arts wouldn't amount to much; I think we all know how he would fare against someone like B.J. Penn or Joe Stevenson. Any Mayweather MMA match would come off as more of a sideshow attraction than anything else.

I would recommend reading all the other fan questions and Stallone's subsequent responses, they're fairly entertaining (for the most part). Stallone did another fan Q&A series on Ain't It Cool News before the release of "Rocky Balboa," which include more detailed anecdotes regarding his training with Lundgren; I recommend snooping through the site and giving them a read as well.

Well, I'm actually surprised that I have something to finally contribute to a thread! These weeks of lurking have finally paid off.

Honestly, I don't think that if Mayweather ever decided to go MMA he would try to knock anyone out. He would probably just throw some jabs, win the rounds, and win by decision. He would jab, then get on his bicycle. This would probably lead to some early wins, unless someone caught him, in which case he would probably lose instantly. I don't really expect anything out of it though.

right, and because of his superior wrestling and takedown defense he would never ever get taken down. right.

Obviously he would get raped by anyone who took him down, or caught him with a sub. Do you really even need to say this? Is it even neccesary? Obviously no one is going to try and throw hands with him; only an idiot would choose a strategy that didn't involve taking him down. I thought it was obvious that one of the meanings of "catching him" involved, you know, taking him down.

That "unless" part is almost a certainty with anyone with a semi-decent takedown and decent chin (****, half of the MMAer population), not unless Mayweather takes to hear to train for wrestling and grappling under qualified instructors (something he's more than capable of.)

You'd be surprised to the amount of retards who beat otherwise on that deadhorse.

Anyways, I find the annectodes on Lundgren to be quite interesting. It's worth nothing that "teh Drago" has a BB in Kyokushin and has been known to be in extremelly good shape all-year round. He certainly ain't a paper-tiger a-la Seagal.

The street argument is retarded. BJJ is so much overkill for the street that its ridiculous. Unless you're the idiot that picks a fight with the high school wrestling team, barring knife or gun play, the opponent shouldn't make it past double leg + ground and pound - Osiris

On Day 4 of Stallone's Q&A with fans, he reminisces about his stickfight scene in "Rambo III":

So I had to do it alone and let me tell you, that was one hellacious painful knuckle smashing experience that I would not recommend to anyone except a chronic masochist.

I was really surprised a few years ago when I found out that Dolph actually has a master's degree in chemical engineering and went to MIT as a Fulbright Scholar. He's also fluent in Swedish, English, German, French, and Spanish.

    He is awesome.
