This doesnt mean I am knocking sparring with pads just that sparring while padded up is good practice for continuous sparring as it reduces your risk and damage.
As far as it denigrating in to slap and crapple. Again that's a result of hard bare knuckle fighting. After the first exchange neither guy wants to exchange and they try to hit with out getting hit and trip and throw the guy.
Also my point isn't that this video is an excellent example of great karate sparring.
Rather my point is that point sparring has it's place for alive bare knuckle training with self defense in mind. People on Bullshido often knock point sparring because it has become a game of tag. To me this is a result of the safety equipment.
The realities of sparring hard with equipment is different than without equipment and again my point is that point sparring was originally intended as a training tool for bare knuckle and reality based (since we don't walk around gloved and padded) fighting.
Ideally the best training uses point sparring like this. KK style no face punch sparring. Hard contact continuous sparring - with equipment and MMA / Sport JuJitsu style sparring with take downs and subs.
The goal being to make your martial art functional for real life application. -

The thing I found interesting about my clip was that it was old. And the point to that was before people padded up that's what the point of point sparring was. It just wasn't tip tap tag
There's also some old B@W Yamaguchi sparring vid I have to find and others
