Lesbian Mafia runs self defense school in Seattle!
Home alive is a grassroots and completely ridiculous self defense school in Seattle. In a neighborhood where the homeless raping and murdering young ladies surprises no one, this is being offered as a solution;
The funny part is, Washington has very liberal (as in open and free) concealed carry laws - a CCW is quite easy to obtain.
People are such 'tards. I respect their goals, yet their methodology make me want to go gong-sau them.Originally Posted by Cullion

Though I am sure that it will result in the revocation of my guy card I must come to the defense of Home Alive. I believe that they do serve their constituency well.
A friend of my was involved with the organization for a while as a self-defense counselor. She did not teach people how to fight, instead she taught a curriculum of practical personal safety right out of the Gift of Fear.
Anyway - classes in the fighting sort of self defense as shown in the clip linked above are available, but I think the organization's bread and butter is in emotional community and practical personal safety strategies which may include some violence but only as a last resort.
This stuff is summed up in the following statement from their website:
"We are dedicated to raising awareness of violence and prevention strategies, and promoting community involvement."
My impression is that they do a good job at delivering against this statement through workshops that include lots of exchange of ideas and no mat time. That said, it looked to me like that woman in the video could hit.
SFGOON - do you really want those women running around armed?

The thing is there isn't that much crime in Seattle, so when something like this does happen it gets a lot of attention from local media. I've walked around belltown plenty of times in the middle of the the night without a problem. Then again, I don't think anyone wants to rape me. Where did this crime take place anyway?

Yeah... I'm going to have to stick up for Home Alive also. Mia Zapata was a schoolmate of mine. If it wasnt for Joan Jett and Home Alive her killer would still be at large. And any group that wants to provide free or cheap classes to underserved communities is good.
If people are getting something when they would normally have not a damn thing, its good. Rather than poke a bunch of fun because a squad of angry dykes high on krav makes you uncomfortable why not see if you can postively engage them and help improve their practice.

Judo + regular running would be my recommended womens' self defense. Break grip, escape from pin, run like hell. If you're under 140 lbs, you're at a big disadvantage when striking a much larger opponent. You can't go wrong with some basic grappling and good footspeed.
