There is a very good point make in this Judo Forum thread: http://judoforum.com/index.php?showtopic=23017

The effects of double weave changes across weight classes. It doesn't have nearly as much of an effect on the gripping for heavier weight classes as it does for the lighter weight classes.

What really matters for us heavy weights (6' 4" and over 260lbs) is that a single weave is way more likely to tear in competition. I've lost a couple just practicing hard.

I'm at the 200+ group and mine's only ever ripped once in three years of competition. I think a lot has to do with the make of that Judogi as much as the weight class. Such as, you could have a really well put together single and a less than great double.

Use a single weave all the time. Even in BJJ. My cheap ass single weave survives just fine and lasted longer than my double weave plate mail Mizuno, which all but disintegrated in my washing machine. Never buying another Mizuno.

I have a 200.00 double that I hate wearing to dang hot. My single weave I paid 45.00 dollars for is much more comfortable. I end up buying a new one every 6 months but I don't care.
