Martial arts insurance within the UK is provided by just four underwriters, it exists because in our "where there's blame there's a claim" based society you cannot expect to study a martial art without having appropriate insurance cover.

Do you drive a car ?
Own or live in a house?
Go on holiday over seas ?
    It's still a scam.

Agreed, but you can't escape it otherwise some twat will eventually come along and sue you to death (most likely for next to nothing) and given the fucking god-awful state of our legal system, they'd prolly win.

But do you agree that a lot of instructors pass on those costs to the students?

At our school, each student is asked to pay $15.00 in Jan of each year. But as our school is unique in that it is free, it seems like the least you can do.

I'll agree that it does happen that's for sure but I don't do it myself. I pay for my own insurance both as a student and instructor from my own pocket, I don't even expect the club funds to cover such expenditure and, member to member insurance isn't particularly expensive, Perkin-Slade through one MA Governing body only charges 1.25 per person per year and this gets you two million pounds worth. Granted there are other underwriters which charge more, some up to about 10 for the same level of cover but this cost is hardly account breaking for students.

My own professional instructor insurance costs me 55 p/a
