For years the army used an thing called 'dubbin' (or dubbing - not sure if the g is at the end or not) to protect the leather of the boots - it was similar to traditional boot polish that comes in the little flat tins, however it was more like petroleum jelly in texture than polish.
It protected the leather by saturating the surface layers which rendered the leather pretty much water-proof.
The only issue is not getting it all over your face if you use your gloves to wipe sweat off....
