Putin is a JUDO master
Black belt from Red Square: Putin's defense maneuvers now on instructional judo video
December 21, 2007
ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (AP) -- President Vladimir Putin is known for his political maneuvers. Now, everyone can check out his moves in another area of expertise: judo.
Putin, a black belt, said Friday that he and Yasuhiro Yamashita, a world and Olympic judo champion from Japan, have made an instructional video together.
The news came after Putin got a message of greeting from Yamashita during anopening ceremony at Toyota Motor Corp.'s new assembly plant near his hometown of St. Petersburg.
"He and I have recorded a video disc as a video supplement to a judo manual," Putin said. "I think it will be coming out in January or February."
Two years ago, Putin and Yamashita attended a judo lesson in St. Petersburg together, helping students practice holds at the judo school Putin, 55, attended in his college years. He had met Yamashita during a visit to Tokyo the previous month.
Putin co-authored a judo manual several years ago.
His physical fitness helped build his popularity among Russians after years with the hard-drinking and chronically ill Boris Yeltsin, who died in April, as president.

I'm going to have to watch this on principle.
I don't know that he's ranked to teach as a "Master." He been awarded a Master of Sport in Judo, which is/was a Soviet distinction for top athletes in a given field. It has everything to do with him kicking people asses, and nothing to do with his Judo rank.
Putin for sure is a 6th dan BB in Judo, though I don't know when the Master title is applied in Judo, and I thought a member of the Olympic team. He holds Master of Sport in both Judo and Sambo from the old Soviet days. Which meant that he had won national championships, I believe in his days you had to have won 3 national Golds before being awarded MOS in Judo or Sambo, so for sure you would not want to grapple with him.
As an example Alexander Karelin was only awarded an MOS in Grecco/Roman wrestling after qualifying for his third Olympic team spot. Anyone who has a genuine MOS from Russia is to be respected that is for sure.
Oh on another note the Unified Sports Classification System was done away with in 1996. Anyone claiming an MOS after that, it is entirely sport and org dependent(and thus often taken with a big grain of salt).
Well, Mr. Putin was a world-class Judo and Sambo guy, and is also 2007 Man Of The Year for Time Magazine. He is the bomb-diggity!!
wrong! he's a dirty communist. thread over
