Lol, I'm an anime geek so I know a little of the site:
From what I've heard, Gaia started out as a online forum/community for anime geeks. Customizable with avatars and the like until it became what it is today. Although, I never visited the site myself, so, take my information with a grain of salt.
4chan on the other hand, is a forum that searched for the most geeky, pornographic, or disgusting things on the web. I just recently started scoping 4chan. Again, never partook in the festivities. Besides, I think muchosucko.com is better >:D
