    So maybe it's so that I do the punch with better technique such that the recoil from the tires won't jolt my arm at an awkward angle? Does that make sense at all?

    I honestly have no idea, but in the finale to Hajime no Ippo, Kimura versus Mashiba, Kimura does this... he's being trained by Miyata who had been training in Thailand with and against kickboxers. I don't really know if he was told to do that or not though.

    We strike and kick car tires in our training. Striking a tire with full force lets you really work on penetrating the target, and it also tests the stability of your stance. It also turns out to be quite a nice conditioner for the forearms and shins too. However, not for the faint of heart or mere beginners.
