There are lots of good refs. In fact pretty much all the main UFC refs do a good job. You can find potential bad calls for all of them (McCarthy included) but generally they do well. I can't stand Mazagatti though, his porn-stache annoys me. Dean and Yamasakii do a better job overall imo though.
The main exception was the CroCop-Gonzaga fight. My conspiracy theory is that Dean was paid to stand the fight up early. Gonzaga was close to finishing on the ground already. -

Herb Dean has gotten worse over the years. I remember thinking how great he was after stopping the Frank Mirr fight when Sylvia's arm snapped. Everyone in the arena was booing until they saw the replay. Afterwards though, fair or not, Dean got the reputation for ending fights early. I never really blamed him because it was obvious he really cared about protecting the fighters. Now though, it seems to me like he's hesitant to stop the fights when he should, and the losers are taking a lot of unnecessary punches as a result. Plus the CroCop standup was a joke (not that it mattered).
