Why is he retiring? It's not like you need to be in your prime to ref. And it's not the most strenuous job in the world, especially seeing as he only has to work once every few weeks. I bet the pay is pretty good too.

I personally thought those NJ ref's did a great job. I think I read on another site (Dont' quote me on this) that they all had gone through BJM's school.

Maybe because commentating and reffing can't mix.

There are lots of good refs. In fact pretty much all the main UFC refs do a good job. You can find potential bad calls for all of them (McCarthy included) but generally they do well. I can't stand Mazagatti though, his porn-stache annoys me. Dean and Yamasakii do a better job overall imo though.

The main exception was the CroCop-Gonzaga fight. My conspiracy theory is that Dean was paid to stand the fight up early. Gonzaga was close to finishing on the ground already.

I wish him well. I look forward to hearing his commentary.

My wife is gonna cry when she hears this. She loves that guy.

Herb Dean has gotten worse over the years. I remember thinking how great he was after stopping the Frank Mirr fight when Sylvia's arm snapped. Everyone in the arena was booing until they saw the replay. Afterwards though, fair or not, Dean got the reputation for ending fights early. I never really blamed him because it was obvious he really cared about protecting the fighters. Now though, it seems to me like he's hesitant to stop the fights when he should, and the losers are taking a lot of unnecessary punches as a result. Plus the CroCop standup was a joke (not that it mattered).

I've always thought Big John was the most consistent ref. It'll be interesting to hear his commentary.

Yamazaki is the worst ref period. He is gunna let someone get murdered before he stops a fight at some point.

So who is the best ref now? I would say Mazzaggatti but he's just not the same without the mustache...

1 terrible Ref in my opinion is Yves Lavigne.
