I think it may be different for everyone.
The last thing I eat before a heavy karate/jujutsu session is a bagel about 3 hours before training.
I also swim, and some of the best times I've turned in have been about an hour and a half after eating a piece of pizza.

YMMV. My window for pre-training snack window closes ~1.5 hours before I start, otherwise I get sick to my stomach. Meat has the longest digestion cycle for me, so I usually don't eat any before training. The absolute best thing I've found is a homemade smoothie with fruit (bananas, peaches, açai), whey protein and whole milk yogurt.
